Edmonton’s Classic Dining Scene

As social creatures, food is often at the heart of everything we do. When you’re having friends over, you might order takeout or splurge on pizza and wings. In addition, no evening or afternoon outing can ever be complete without a few refreshments.

When it comes to classic sit-down restaurants, Edmonton deserves a spot on the national stage. Family restaurants, fine dining establishments, cafes, bakeries, and fast food all provide a delectable menu to suit any tastes. Here are a few of my favourite examples:

Bistro Praha: A long-time staple in Edmonton featuring a wide range of European specialties.

DaDeO: 1950s dining with a modern twist. Home-style Cajun cooking allows you to taste the flavours of New Orleans without leaving your neighbourhood. Fun fact: Your dog is welcome to join you on the patio!

La Ronde Revolving Restaurant: Come enjoy the view of the city. A breathtaking location at the top of the Chateau Lacombe Hotel will make your fine-dining experience a night to remember.

Dining and a Show: The Best of Both Worlds

What can possibly be better than a fantastic meal with friends or beloved family members? How about adding a little entertainment into the mix? Edmonton boasts numerous venues that aim to tickle your tastebuds and ignite your imagination. Here are a few ideas to put on your must-visit list:

Jubilations Dinner Theatre: Poking fun at pop culture is a long-standing Canadian tradition. At Jubiliations, you’ll laugh out loud at hilarious parodies while character servers bring out multiple courses.

Yardbird Suite: Hot food and hot jazz, talk about a winning combination. You’ll experience both at Edmonton’s premier jazz venue.

Mayfield Dinner Theatre: Live theatrical performances come alive, all while you savour high-quality fare from an elevated menu.

Themed Dining and Entertainment

Thanks to a growing number of themed restaurants, dining out can become a memorable experience that you will talk about for years. Here are a few places where the atmosphere is just as delicious as the food:

Black Pearl Seafood Bar: Why just sample from a seafood platter when you can undertake a complete nautical adventure? The immersive lighting theme and old-world ceiling map will make you feel as though you’re out on the ocean. All this as you stay warm, comfortable, and most importantly, well-fed.

The Hexagon Board Game Café: If you’re looking for something different, call up some friends and challenge them to a board game. The wide-ranging food and drink menu means no one will go hungry as you attempt to take over the world or figure out whodunit.

Le Petit Chef: Have you ever wondered “what if food could talk?” You’re about to find out. A tiny chef projected right onto your plate leads you through a culinary adventure of gourmet appetizers, main courses, and desserts.

The Muttart Conservatory: An elegant dining experience with stunning scenery awaits. Events like “Muttart Dome Brunch” and “After Hours” will introduce offerings from local breweries as you take in the gardens and botanical pyramids.

Treats for Your Whole Family

Finding a place everyone will love can be a challenge, especially when you have a picky eater (or two) in your family. Fortunately, Edmonton is home to countless family-friendly restaurants and cafes that cater to all tastes and preferences:

The Commodore Restaurant: It can be hard to get any group of people to agree on anything, but one thing is certain: everyone loves an all-day breakfast! The Commodore has been serving up classic staples since 1942.

Rockin’ Robyn’s: Get your fries, burgers, or fresh homemade pies with a side of nostalgia! This 1950s-style diner is one of Edmonton’s best-kept secrets.

Little Brick Cafe: You can never go wrong with pastries and sandwiches. Why not enjoy a tasty treat as you sip a coffee or another favourite beverage? During the warmer months, you can savour the flavours while taking in the view from the picturesque outdoor patio.

Bon Ton Bakery: When in doubt, opt for dessert. The cakes, cookies, and delectable pastries at Bon Ton have been satisfying “sweet tooths” for decades. You can also find freshly baked bread and bagels, as well as other high-quality grocery staples.

Jolene’s Personal Recommendations

As a self-confessed foodie, I have a real appreciation for Edmonton’s incredible restaurants. Fast food, fine dining, sweet desserts, I love them all! It’s so hard to narrow it down to a favourite, but here are a few places you have to try!

XIX Nineteen: An elegant space that features a wide range of Canadian dishes. Get the ginger beef and the flatbread. Trust me, you will not be disappointed!

Tzin Wine & Tapas: This is a tiny restaurant with the cutest patio. Be sure to make a special request for a french martini. They are not on the menu, but at least one is a must!

De Dutch: Seriously, the best crepes! Nothing else needs to be said. That’s just one of the reasons this is a top spot for breakfast and brunch.

There are many great reasons to consider relocating to Edmonton. It’s not all about the food, but a fantastic lineup of restaurants and entertainment is just one aspect of Edmonton life that will make you feel right at home.
